How long is the performance exam?

1 hour 30 minutes (including preparation time).

Do I have to take a written exam?

No. Please see page 7 of the Syllabus Guide for details of the qualification structure and unit contents.

I have no previous live performance experience. Can I still do the Diploma?

You don’t need any previous live performance experience but it will undoubtedly help you in your own understanding and competence when performing in front of others.

I cannot read music. Does this matter?

Yes. There is a substantial QSP that requires established reading skills.

Do I have to play my pieces from memory?

Yes. You must however bring 2 fully notated scores on the day of your exam, for examiners’ use.

Is TAB acceptable?

Not on its own. There must be a notated score submitted (2 copies for examiners’ use).

Can I bring my own equipment?

Yes. You should let Rockschool know what equipment you intend on bringing in your application form.

Can I use more than one instrument?

Yes, as long as the transition between instrument performances doesn’t disrupt the timing of the overall performance programme.

I already have a music undergraduate degree. Is there any point in doing a Diploma?

Yes. The Rockschool Performance Diplomas are specifically geared towards performance, whereas an undergraduate degree in music may include additional subjects with less emphasis upon instrumental performance.

What does Viva Voce mean?

This is an oral examination where you will be required to discuss your performance programme and your presentation, as well as other topics (see page 7 of the Syllabus Guide for details).

What is a QSP?

QSP means ‘Quick Study Piece’. You are given your QSP 45 minutes before the exam. This is a substantial piece of work lasting between 2 ½ and 3 ½ minutes depending upon your level, and played with a backing track (which will be provided). It consists of written notation and an improvised passage. You are expected to give it a fluent and stylistic account at both levels. Where you place it within your performance programme is your decision. For further information see page 7 of the syllabus guide.

What happens if my application is late?

You will be charged £25 for a late entry. An application received up to 1 month before the exam period start date will be considered as a late entry. Please see page 11 of the Syllabus Guide for dates.
